Preface to the Fourth Edition
The fourth edition of Step-Up: A High-Yield, Systems-Based Review for the USMLE Step 1, while retaining the essential
features of the fi rst three editions, has been changed in some important ways. First, an introduction to the USMLE Step
1 exam and an effective guide to preparation have been added to provide the student with strategies for success. To reinforce
and ease student preparation, the authors have created an online question bank available with purchase of the book
consisting of greater than 350 questions in USMLE Step 1 format. The popularity of the case studies text “Step-Up to
the Bedside” led to our development of clinical vignettes within the body of each chapter. These vignettes, following the
format of the rest of the book, are integrated within each chapter, discussing topics and concepts as they arise. We have
further expanded coverage of the therapeutics portion of each system by integrating more pharmacology directly into
each system at the appropriate areas within the text. However, we retained the “Drug Index” at the end of the text for reference.
In fact, we have added a “Crunch Time Review” to the end of the book to facilitate last-minute studying and keep
the reader organized. Each chapter also has mnemonics integrated into the body of the text to help the reader remember
vital facts that are presented. Finally, fi gures, tables, and text have been revised to refl ect the most current thinking in
medicine. Many of these changes were implemented as a result of feedback from readers like you, and we hope to continue
