One of the biggest earthquakes in recorded history struck Japan on
March 11, creating a powerful tsunami that killed many people. Within
hours, tsunami waves touched the shores of Hawaii and surrounding areas
in the Pacific.

As millions of people now struggle with the aftermath of these
disasters and try to rebuild their lives, KidsHealth looked for ways
that families can help.

Helping Out At Home

News about the devastation reached people around the world in minutes
via phone, Internet, and TV, reminding us just how small — and
connected — our world has become. But even though we're so connected,
we're not always able to help as much as we'd like.

If you can't reach people affected by this tragedy, there are probably many people in your community who need your help.

Dealing With Feelings

News reports about the devastation may upset your kids.
It's normal for kids to worry when something like this happens. Offer
reassurances that it's normal to feel sad about disasters, even when
your family is fine and lives far away.

Tell your kids that their sad feelings will get better
over time and that even those who lost the most in a disaster will
slowly heal thanks to the people who care for them.
