Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment that's been used to
treat individuals with several conditions including infertility.
Practitioners believe in a life energy that flows through the body
called, Qi. When this energy becomes blocked due to stress, trauma, lack
of exercise, or poor diet, practitioners believe that it may manifest
in certain conditions and symptoms such as infertility, pain, etc. By
releasing positive energy through acupuncture, it is thought to push out
negative energy in the process, thereby providing patients with relief
from various ailments.
The treatment works by placing thin,
sterile needles in certain points on the body, and then stimulating
them. This is thought to release positive energy so the negative energy
is pushed out in the process. As for its effects on fertility, it may
help to regulate the menstrual cycle, enhance cervical mucus, enhance
libido, reduce stress, thicken the endometrial lining, and clear
blockages in the fallopian tubes. Other benefits are possible as well.
The specific points used will vary from one patient to the next, and
each patient will be evaluated by the acupuncturist prior to beginning
the treatment. Common points include those that stimulate the ovaries,
uterus, and fallopian tubes. These points are located on the lower part
of the abdomen, on the back, and on the arms and legs.
Acupuncture
may be used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization, or IVF. This
procedure combines sperm and eggs in a dish in a laboratory so they may
create embryos. The embryos are later transferred to the uterus where
they may implant in the uterine lining. The woman's menstrual cycle will
be closely monitored to determine when ovulation occurs. Some women
choose to take fertility medication to help stimulate ovulation. Eggs
are retrieved through a separate procedure, meaning women must undergo
two procedures for each cycle of IVF, unless embryos from previous
cycles are frozen for use in future cycles.
By combining
acupuncture and IVF, many patients improve their odds of success. For
some couples, the desire to get pregnant can be so intense that it
actually stresses them out and reduces their fertility. Acupuncture has
helped many relieve stress, which can help patients improve their
fertility. The treatment may begin a few weeks before the acupuncture
IVF procedure, and may even continue for several weeks after becoming
pregnant, as it is during the first trimester that most miscarriages
occur. Acupuncture will target points aimed at reducing the chance of
miscarriage.

Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an
entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published
by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book.
Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman,
editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin
Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book has become the primary reference
in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. With
the subtle use of color to illustrate the acupuncture points and
anatomical features, the new second edition of A Manual of Acupuncture
is even more attractive and user-friendly than the first.
Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and
collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection,
location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of
the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified
by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is
located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be
found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated
drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500
drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also
practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary
information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their
English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of
the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point
indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.
