Introduction
It is quite common knowledge
that men have a good chance of developing male pattern baldness. But did you know that women could develop the same condition?
Female pattern baldness is one of the most common types of hair loss in women
today. Here is how it develops, what it looks like and how you can stop it.
Causes Of Female Pattern Baldness
If you are a female and are losing your hair uniformly from across your
scalp, then chances are good you have inherited the gene from either your mother or father, that causes the condition called female pattern
baldness. The technical term for this is androgenetic alopecia.
The genes that cause female pattern baldness are sensitive to certain
hormones. These hormones, when attached to a hair follicle, will cause
the follicle to start to die. This results in the hair growing shorter and thinner. In fact, some hair follicles will completely shut down and
not grow hair at all.
The hormones that result in hair loss are
known androgens. The two androgens are testosterone, more common in men
than women, and dehydroepiandroterone. These androgens are converted to
dihydrotesttosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase.
When your body produces the hormone DHT, they will attach to your hair
follicles causing them to shrink and deteriorate through a process called miniaturization.
What Female Pattern Baldness Looks Like
While men will usually form the typical bald patch on top the scalp, women
will usually have a general thinning of their hair across the scalp. Most of the hair loss is on the top of the scalp and just behind the
bangs.
How To Stop It
There are classes of
drugs called antiandrogen that can stop hair loss and re-grow hair.. The basic way they work is by preventing the androgens from attaching to the hair follicle, preventing the hair follicle from going through he
miniaturization process.
Unfortunately these drugs have not been
approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to stop hair loss and
re-grow hair here in the United States
But the FDA has approved
antiandrogen to help women with other medical conditions such as acne,
and polycystic ovary disease to name a few. If you do consider you want
to take these types of drugs to combat hair loss, consult with your physician or dermatologist. Because they have known to cause birth
defects.
One drug that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss in women caused by female pattern baldness is Minoxidil. This is a liquid solution used at 2% solution strength while men can use it at 5% strength.

Jimmy Chase got into hair styling when he was in the Navy. After
the Navy, he continued on in the profession of hair styling and studied
how people can have beautiful hair.
Jimmy Chase started losing his
hair when he turned 50. He has done lots of studies on loss of hair, in
both men and women, to determine what works and what doesn't. He has
successfully stopped his hair loss and has even re-grown some of his
hair. He wants to help other people learn what he has learned, on
dealing with loss of hair and re-growing hair.
